How to Tune In

MP3 Streaming

To be able to listen to this format you need a media player capable of MP3 streaming on your computer or device. The best of them are usually free, here's a partial list:

If you are on Windows, we really recommend using the free Winamp player. Download and install it here. This is one of the best choices in our opinion.

Once you install it, click on the   button on our homepage. 96k bitrate is only for those who are on a fast broadband connection, either at work or DSL, or Cable.

There are other media players for Windows streaming in MP3: iTunes for Windows, RealOne, MusicMatch, etc (but we still recommend Winamp!)

If you are using Unix/Linux, there are a number of clients for your platforms which should work: VLC  XMMS  mpg123  Xaudio  MPlayer

If you are on a Mac, iTunes and VLC are your popular choices.

AAC Streaming

AAC is a better audio compression format, perhaps better known as the format of choice for Apple's iTunes. It enables great sound at lower bitrates than the old MP3 technology.

Currently, our AAC streams are only available for our Premium subscribers at 128k. To be able to listen to this format you need a media player capable of playing AAC streams.

Windows users can use the popular Winamp player. Download and install it here. Make sure you don't have a very old version of Winamp as it may be missing some required plugins.

Once you have a compatible player ready, click on the   button on our homepage while being logged in to your Premium account. This format is very recommended. The quality is amazing and the efficiency of streaming is better since the bitrate is lower!

If you are using Macs, Unix/Linux: there aren't too many players supporting AAC streaming yet. Give the open source VLC player a try. Ironically, iTunes does NOT work yet. iTunes plays AAC *files*, but not AAC radio *streams*, feel free to complain to Apple.

XMMS player on Unix/Linux player should work with the faad2 plugin.

aacPlus Streaming

aacPlus (HE-AAC) is a better audio compression format enabling great sound at extremely low bitrates. It uses patented technology on the AAC format (mentioned above) to drastically improve low bitrate compression. Expect to see it in use on the web more frequently!

To be able to listen to this format you need a media player capable of aacPlus streaming on your computer or device.

Windows users can use the popular Winamp player. Download and install it here.
For those with older versions, you need at least 5.05 or later for aacPlus streaming.

Once you have a compatible player ready, click on the   button on our homepage. Though the bitrate is only 24k the quality is quite surprising!

If you are using Macs, Unix/Linux: there aren't too many players supporting aacPlus yet, but the open source VLC player supports it for most platforms.

HE-AAC is not the plain AAC which is used by Apple. For more details and impressions, we recommend this Slate.com article, which also mentions our Mostly Classical channel.

Windows Media Streaming

To be able to listen to this format you need a media player capable of Windows Media format streaming.

If you are on Windows, chances are you already have Microsoft Windows Media player included with the OS. We recommend using version 9 or higher.

To listen, click on the   button on our homepage, and your player should start playing the stream.

If you are an Apple user: there's a version of Windows Media available. It's not as robust as for Windows, but should do the job. Another open source player called VLC also might do the job better.

If you are using Unix/Linux
, try VLC, or there may even be some unofficial plugins around for your popular player.
